When is Father's Day?


The father is an extremely important figure in the development of a child's personality and identity, both in terms of social and emotional aspects.

Much more than a commercial date, the Father's Day it is a special occasion to honor and express all the love and gratitude to them, who are so important in our lives.

In Brazil, Father's Day is celebrated in the second sunday in august. So, in 2020, Father's Day will be on the 9th of August.

Father's Day Origin

The date originated in the U.S. On December 6, 1907, an explosion occurred in a coal mine in the town of Monongah, Virginia. Most of the victims, more precisely 250 of them were parents.

On July 5 of the following year, a celebration was held at the Fairmont Methodist Church to honor the parents who died in the tragedy. The ceremony was intended to highlight the importance of the father figure in children's lives.

This is the first record related to a celebration similar to Father's Day. However, its repercussion occurred only locally, and the date did not become official.

There were celebrations in other American locations in the following years to honor the parents. Likewise, none of them were officially recognized, despite numerous attempts to implement Father's Day.

Only in 1966 did the date become official. Then-president Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973) determined that Father's Day would be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June.

In 1972, the president Richard Nixon (1913–1994), finally, signed the decree that established the date as a fixed national holiday.

Father's Day in Brazil

While the Mothers Day it was already celebrated in Brazil since 1932, Father's Day was only instituted in the country in the 50s.

The main motivation for marking the date on the Brazilian calendar was commercial. It was a suggestion from advertising and director of Jornal and Rádio Globo, Sylvio Behring, as an initiative to attract advertisers.

The first celebration of Father's Day in Brazil was on August 16, in honor of St. Joaquim's Day, which, according to Catholic church, is the patriarch of the family.

Years later the date was officially moved to the second Sunday in August. Father's Day was consolidated and gained commercial strength only from the 70s.

Father's day around the world

The date of celebration of Father's Day varies from one country to another. In those with strong influence of the Catholic Church, the date coincides with the Day of St. Joseph, adoptive father of Jesus Christ, celebrated on March 19. It is the case of Italy, Spain and Portugal.

At Russia, Father's Day is celebrated on February 23rd. At Thailand, the chosen date was December 5th. Romania celebrates parents on the same date that we Brazilians celebrate Mother's Day, that is, on the second Sunday in May.

However, the most common date for the celebration of Father's Day is the third Sunday in June. U.S, England, Argentina, Chile and Greece are examples of the more than 70 countries that adopted the date under the influence of its American origins.
