Origin of the name America

Even with disagreements, there are scholars who claim that the origin of the name America comes from the tribute paid to a navigator and ocean explorer, the Italian named Americo Vespucci (1454-1512).

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) is considered the discoverer of the American continent. However, upon his arrival, he believed he was in the Indies.

With this, the tribute was attributed to Amerigo Vespucci, as he was the first navigator who arrived in the new lands and learned that he was on a new continent – he was not mistaken like Columbus.

Thus, the descriptions made by Amerigo Vespucci during the trip confirmed that he had the notion that he was stepping into new lands.
