Manuel Francisco Isaac Albéniz

Spanish nationalist composer born in Camprodón, province of Gerona, one of the most original representatives of musical nationalism in his country at the end of the 19th century. At just four years old, he gave his first piano recital in Barcelona, and from the age of ten he performed numerous concert tours, both in Spain and throughout Europe and Latin America. At the same time, he continued to improve his musical training, mainly in Barcelona and in the conservatories of Leipzig and Brussels; in the latter he won first prize for piano. After his marriage (1883), he came into contact with conductor Felipe Pedrell, a pioneer of Spanish nationalist music, who aroused in him an interest in composition.
In search of new musical knowledge he moved (1893) to Paris, where he came into contact with a group of musicians who studied deep proposals for aesthetic renewal, between among whom Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré stood out, he extracted his compositional technique, maintaining a close bond with the musical sensibility and folklore of his parents. The result was an extensive and original musical production composed of more than 200 pieces from different musical genres: zarzuelas and lyrical dramas, among which Pepita Jiménez (1896) stands out; orchestral suites such as Catalonia; chamber works and songs.

His best works, however, were piano pieces such as Suite española and Rapsodia española, in which the spirit of traditional Hispanic music is reflected in a masterful synthesis. His main work in this regard would be the 12 pianistic compositions of the Suite Iberia (1906-1909), which, in addition to its enormous technical complexity, it represented a radical innovation within nationalist music Spanish. He died relatively young, in full creative maturity, in Cambo-les-Bains, France.
