Brazilian lawyer, politician, writer and journalist born in Pirapemas, MA, one of the most widely read of his time thanks to the historical chronicles and works of children's literature, which reached the general public with several volumes of chronicles historical events. After studying in São Luís and Recife, he settled in Rio de Janeiro, where he practiced law and worked as a journalist. He worked at Gazeta de Notícias, Correio da Manhã and Jornal do Brasil, was a theater critic for A Manhã and a professor of theater history. He entered politics and was elected state deputy (1911) and later federal deputy for Maranhão (1927).
He moved away from political practice after being imprisoned (1930) by the Getulist revolution and went into literature, where he wrote novels, plays, children's books and historical chronicles. He began writing historical themes (1921), with the publication of two books, Terra de Santa Cruz and Histórias de Nossa História, and a long series of his historical chronicles. He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and died in Rio de Janeiro.

They are still remembered in his literary productions Brasil dos meugrandes (1927), Alcovas da História (1934) and O País do Pau de Inca (1939). For children, he wrote, among others, História do Brasil for children (1934), Cazuza (1938) and História da Liberdade (1962). As a novelist, he wrote Balaiada (1927) and plays such as A Marquesa de Santos (1938) and O grande amor de Gonçalves Dias (1959). In his works of children's literature he usually included some lesson about the past.
