Difference between religion and sect

you know the difference between religion and sect? If you don't know, it's time to understand the definition of each of these terms.

Religion

The word religion it has a dubious origin in Latin, being able, at two different moments in the work of the great patristic philosopher Augustine of Hippo, meaning to re-elect or reconnect. There is a consensus, however, in the adoption of this last meaning (reconnect, de re-connect).

The Aurélio Dictionary, for example, uses this notion to present the meaning of the term religion as a reestablishment of the broken link between human beings and God. in tradition Christian, this notion makes more sense, since original sin broke the link between men and the supreme being, and man must seek to reestablish that link.

In general, religion can designate the belief in one or more gods, superior by some or more characteristics to human beings, and who, in some way, create, govern and order the natural world. Religions, in general, are about the belief in the supernatural, therefore, they cannot be proven through the natural sciences.

The relationship between religious and religious faith is generally based on belief and loyalty. The devotee to a religion does not, in theory, need material confirmations to prove what he believes. He only believes, whether for personal, material reasons (in the case of the materialization of inexplicable phenomena, the so-called miracles), either by habit and culture.

Religions can derive from the interpretation of a sacred scripture (as Christianity derives from the New Testament of the Bible) or from religious practices such as Candomblé.

sect

sect, in turn, according to the Aurélio Dictionary, derives from the Latin term sect, which means follower. Often, one or more people form a sect when they diverge from traditional thinking and accumulate followers of this new way of thinking. Sects can be established in the religious, political, moral and even philosophical spheres (the ancient Greek philosophers founded sects, in which their disciples were their followers). Even Jesus Christ he founded a sect, as his apostles followed him and what came next was a break with religion jewish, which was the religious creed common to the inhabitants of the vicinity of Jerusalem and Galilee.

One group may call another group a sect because of their point of view. However, that group called sect can perfectly call itself a new religion. What comes into play, in this case, is the question of the perspective of those who analyze and judge what is at issue.
