The dandelion flower has the meaning of freedom, optimism, hope and spiritual light.
For Christians in the Middle Ages, the Dandelion flower was associated with Christ and the Virgin Mary, possibly because of the shape of the flower and the bright yellow color that resembles the rays of the sun.
The name by which the Dandelion plant is popularly known seems to have its origins in the plant's appearance: its leaves are very toothed and its yellow flowers look like a lion's mane.
At a certain stage, when the flower is blown it falls apart easily. The seeds are blown away, spread out and, at the right time, bloom again.
Due to this characteristic it is also known by the name "hope". The phrase "open the windows and let hope enter your house brought by the afternoon wind" is a reference to the Dandelion.
There are those who say that when blowing a flower petal, one should make a request about the desired love. If the wind brings the petal back, it is a sign that the wish will soon be fulfilled.
The Dandelion plant can be found more easily in humid places and is popularly appreciated for its medicinal effects. The tea favors digestion and relieves constipation. It is used to purify the blood, stimulate appetite and treat liver and gallbladder problems.
Dandelion belongs to the plant genus "Taraxacum" word that derives from Arabic, "tarakshaqum", which means bitter herb. The name "dandelion" is of French origin and was given by the Norman people. In French, "dent-de-lion" has a similar pronunciation to "dandelion", name by which it is designated in English.

Dandelion can also be used as food. Its tender leaves have a strong nutritional value and therefore combine very well with salads. Flower buds are edible and can be cooked similarly to capers.
When the plants are 2 or 3 years old, their roots, after drying, ground and roasting, replace coffee, a characteristic also found in chicory. This drink benefits the liver and gallbladder, increases vitality and improves mental concentration. Flowers are often used in the production of wine and other strong alcoholic beverages.
