The role of the speech therapist in facial aesthetics

Speech therapy works with different areas of the body, and facial aesthetics is an innovative practice based on oral motricity, which is considered one of the specialties in the area of ​​speech therapy.

Aesthetic Speech Therapy aims to work the facial muscles through muscle relaxation, specific exercises and daily guidelines for the the patient is aware of their expressions and habits, in order to provide conditions to modify them and obtain what most people seek: health and beauty.
Generally, facial aesthetic speech therapy is indicated in specific cases. For example:
• Pre and post-surgical procedures, especially face surgeries;
• Changing habits and quality of life, reducing muscle tension in the facial and cervical regions, with direct effects on body relaxation;
• Preventive and aesthetic-functional treatment that does not require invasive or painful procedures, for men and women from the age of 30 who wish to delay the appearance of signs of aging, among other diverse needs and desires.


Considering that the main purpose of the speech therapist's work with the face is to strengthen and balance the muscles of the same, allows the adaptation of the face providing the correct functioning that the face muscles need, providing benefits like:
• Strengthen and support the face;
• Harmonize the aesthetic and the functional;
• Increase skin oxygenation and vascularization;
• Minimize or eliminate exacerbated or inappropriate facial mimics;
• Eliminate and/or attenuate wrinkles and expression marks,
• Balance the muscle forces of the face and neck;
• Provide the acquisition of healthy orofacial and cervical habits;
• Adapting to posture, breathing, chewing, swallowing and speaking.
It is noteworthy that this type of treatment is contraindicated in certain situations where the patient presents:
• Excess acne on the skin;
• Performs or has already undergone treatment based on oral isotretinoin;
• In case of facial surgery, 6 months of rest and medical authorization are recommended;
• Patients who underwent bioplasty;
• Patients under the influence of botulinum toxin, known as (botox).
This type of treatment applied by speech therapists despite being an area of ​​expertise currently limited and little publicized because it is applied by other professionals, which have been working for a longer time, has been much sought after by people seeking such service and the real function and benefits of this service are often unknown. to offer.
