WHO is the acronym for World Health Organization, which is an agency specialized in health, founded in 1948 and subordinate to the United Nations. WHO headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland.
The WHO was created right after the end of the 19th century wars such as Mexico and Crimea. The WHO was created with the objective of developing as much as possible the level of health of all peoples, that is, improving the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being of citizens. Brazil has a great participation in the history of the World Health Organization, the proposal to create the WHO was authored by the delegates from Brazil, who proposed the establishment of an international public health body with worldwide reach, and since then, both have developed an intense cooperation.
WHO is made up of 193 Member States, including all UN Member States except Liechtenstein and two non-UN members, Niue and the Cook Islands.
WHO is funded by contributions from Member States and various donors. In recent years, the work of WHO has grown significantly also with the collaboration of external entities; and there are also currently around 80 partnerships with non-governmental organizations and pharmaceutical industries.
