USA (or EE.UU.) is an abbreviation that means U.S. It is used in the Spanish language to refer to the country whose official name is the United States of America (USA). The USA or the original USA acronym is also used (United States of America), less often.
According to the grammatical rules of the Spanish language, when the abbreviated word to form an acronym is in the plural, the first letter of that word must be duplicated. One of the exceptions to this rule is the word UN (Organization of the United Nations).
Other examples of abbreviations for plural Spanish terms are:
AA.EE. "Foreign Affairs" (Foreign Affairs)
FF.AA. "Fuerzas Armadas" (Armed forces)
HR "Human Resources" (Human Resources)
RR.PP. "Public Relations" (Public relations)
In other languages this situation can also occur. In Portuguese, the abbreviation for author is A. while for the plural word "Authors" it changes to A.A. In the word "pages" the plural abbreviation can also be doubled "pp." (or pp.). In the English language, likewise, the abbreviation of "
pages" is "pp.", the singular, in both languages, (page or page) will be "p."
