Meaning of Tubers (What they are, Concept and Definition)

Tubers are plants that are characterized by having the stout and underground stem - usually with a rounded or oval shape - where its nutrients are stored.

The energy reserve in the stem has the function of providing nutrients to the plant during its initial growth phase, especially when it is not yet able to carry out photosynthesis.

Roots, on the other hand, participate in development by transporting water and nutrients, but do not have the function of storing them.

These vegetables are very nutritious and rich in vitamins A, C and some B complex vitamins. They also have a good amount of starch, which is one of those responsible for their development. Because they contain starch in their composition, when consumed, they are capable of providing a good amount of energy.

Difference between tubers, bulbs and roots

It is common that these three types of vegetables are confused, as they have similar aspects and some characteristics in common.

They are mainly differentiated by the part of the plant where their nutrients are stored. Look:

tuberclesPotatoes (tubers), beets (roots) and onions (bulbs).

You tubers, as we have seen, have their roots underground and the storage of nutrients takes place in the stem.

Potatoes and yams are well known tubers and are widely used in cooking.

At roots - also called tuberous roots - have the stem out of the ground and the edible part is underground. Nutrients, unlike tubers, are stored in their roots.

Some examples are: beets, cassava, turnips and carrots.

already the bulbs, like tubers, also store nutrients in their stem, which is equally underground. However, its shape is different, flatter - compared to a tubercle.

Garlic and onions are examples of bulbs.

Benefits of Tuber Consumption

Tubers are rich in several important vitamins for the proper functioning of the body. They are also excellent sources of minerals.

Regular consumption of these vegetables also provides energy, as starch (carbohydrate) is an excellent source of energy. Therefore, the consumption of tubers is indicated, for example, before the practice of physical exercises.

In addition, they are also a source of inulin, an important substance to ensure the absorption of calcium and magnesium by the body.
