The history of the emergence of margarine is related to the winning of the Hippólyte de Mége Mouriés prize, in 1869. This prize, proposed by Napoleon's government for anyone who discovered a product similar to butter, but one that was easily preserved and had more reasonable prices. At that time France was going through a serious economic crisis and needed several genres foodstuffs, as butter became an increasingly expensive and scarce product, it did not provide for the little classes. favored.
Mége performed several experiments and managed to produce a new fat that would be the basis of margarine. The word margarine comes from the Greek “margaron” which means “pearl”, due to its appearance pearl of the new product, which since then has gone through several transformations in its manufacturing.
The first margarine factory appeared in Holland in the year 1871. From then on, Europe started to consume margarine, even when butter returned to the market in abundance.
