Why did Cangaceiro Lampião start wearing glasses?
The story begins in August 1925 when, in one of his many invasions through the hinterland of Pernambuco, Lampião and his group were surprised by the police in the region.
That day's shooting marked all of Lampião's life. His younger brother named Livino was hit by the police and died. Lampião, when reacting, was wounded in the right eye by a thorn from the cactus that the policeman hit with a shotgun.
Lampião was taken to a doctor in a town, close to the accident, called Triunfo, where they removed the thorn from his eye. The doctor could not rid him of his blindness. Good-humored, Lampião said he needed only one eye to shoot since even having two he needed to close one, and he didn't care what happened.
From then on, he became left-handed when shooting and wore glasses to hide his blindness from those who didn't know him and to protect his other eye from the country's sun.
