Meaning of Racism (What it is, Concept and Definition)

racism is the social discrimination based on the concept that there are different human races and that one is superior to others. This notion is based on different motivations, especially physical characteristics and other traits of human behavior.

Consists of a derogatory and discriminatory attitude not based on scientific criteria in relation to some social or ethnic group.

Racism in Brazil is a crime provided for in Law n. 7716/1989, is unbailable and does not prescribe, that is, whoever committed the racist act can be convicted even years after the crime.

Racial prejudice is related to concepts such as homophobia, xenophobia, bullying racist, among others much debated nowadays.

March 21st was established by UN (United Nations) as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The date was chosen in memory of the more than 60 people killed in the massacre that took place in South Africa that same day in 1960.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created with the aim of protecting the

fundamental human rights condemning all types of discrimination based on color, gender, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion or any other condition.

Racism and Prejudice

Racism and prejudice are intertwined. Racism is a type of ethnic prejudice, a preconceived and pejorative idea about an ethnicity or social group.

Prejudice usually may not be exclusively linked to the physical appearance of a person or people.

Prejudice can be related to a person's lifestyle (for example, their sexual orientation). There can also be prejudice regarding a person's social class, such as an aversion to poor people.

Xenophobia is also a type of prejudice, which indicates a repugnance towards foreign people.

reverse racism

O reverse racism, or reverse racism, debates the existence of racism against whites, that is, that blacks would discriminate against white people. The concept has not been scientifically determined as the idea itself is contradictory. The existence of racism presupposes a social discrimination that is only possible through the establishment of power relations and hierarchical differences. And in historical and social terms, black groups do not have greater power than whites, which therefore it could not generate a situation of oppression, which is what it presupposes from an attitude racist.

Types of racism

There are several types of racism, including individual, institutional, cultural, primary, communitarian or differential racism and ecological or environmental racism.

Racism is a social problem in both underdeveloped and developed nations, mainly in the form of xenophobia. Racism in the United States has serious consequences, and leads to increased violence in mostly black and Hispanic suburbs in relation to Arab immigrants, among the LGBT community, and other groups considered minorities and with characteristics different from whites North Americans.

The economic crisis and population growth are often the reason for racial problems. Examples include the case of Britain with immigrants, France with North Africans, Germany with Syrians, or Spain with the Roma population and illegal black workers.

Racism can be related to the politics of a country, one of the greatest examples being National Socialist Germany, which persecuted and exterminated Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, among other groups, based on arguments about the superiority of race Aryan. Anti-Semitism (racism against Jews) led to the holocaust, culminating in World War II.
