The Legislative Power of Brazil is formed by the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The federal deputy is the representative of the people in the National Congress and his term is 4 years, with no limit for reelection. To apply for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 21 years old;
- Be registered in a political party;
- Have Brazilian nationality;
- Possess electoral domicile in the state for which you are running for office;
- Have full exercise of political rights.
The Chamber of Deputies is composed of 513 members, who receive a monthly salary of approximately R$16,000. The number of deputies is established in the year prior to the elections, as the number of representatives for each state is fixed according to the number of inhabitants of each federative unit. In this sense, more populous states elect more federal deputies. However, the maximum number of deputies per state is 70 and the minimum number is 8.
The main function of this position is the drafting of laws. According to the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil, other important duties of federal deputies are:
- Elaborate its internal regulations;
- Oversee the acts of the Executive Branch;
- Authorize, by two thirds of its members, the initiation of proceedings against the President and Vice President of the Republic and the Ministers of State;
- Undertake the accounts of the President of the Republic, when not presented to the National Congress within sixty days after the opening of the legislative session;
- Elect members of the Council of the Republic, pursuant to art. 89, VII.
