The distribution of population in the northern region

From 1980 onwards, the population of the North Region had a good level of vegetative growth, but the number of inhabitants is still modest. Currently, the population of this region comprises 15,864,454 inhabitants, accounting for only 8% of the Brazilian people, distributed over a gigantic territorial extension of 3 869 637.9 km2. The absolute population of the North Region only surpasses that of the Central-West Region.
Within the North Region there is a great disparity between the states in terms of population concentration, for example, Pará is home to about 7,581,051 inhabitants, this gives it the status of the most populous regionally, while Roraima has only 450,479 population.
In general, the demographic density of all northern states is small, the population is mostly concentrated in urban centers (cities), there are approximately 500 municipalities.
A common aspect of the population of the North Region, both rural and urban dwellers, is the incidence of concentration of people on the banks of rivers. The main cities in the Region are located on the banks of rivers, such as Manaus, Belém, Porto Velho, Santarém, Marabá and Altamira. This configuration is called the riverside population.

The fact that the population is concentrated on the banks of rivers is due to several factors, the main one being the difficulty to move within the forest Amazon and the lack of transport infrastructure, such as highways and railways, so the best alternative is to use rivers with a circulation route (waterway).
A problem faced by virtually all states in the North region is the partial lack of sewage and treated water networks. states like Acre where only 35% of the population has access to the sewage system, Tocantins 16%, and the state with the highest percentage does not exceed 50% (For).
