Odysseus Alepoudhelis, the Odysseus Elytis

Greek poet born in Iráklion, Crete, one of the main names in modern Greek literature. He studied law at the University of Athens where he was attracted by the French surrealist current and went on to collaborate with the literary magazine Nea Grammata.
During the occupation of Greece by the Germans in World War II, he joined the anti-fascist resistance in Albania. After the war, he only returned to activity with the extensive poem To axion est (1959). Initially a naturalist and with a deep concern for the social and political problems of his land, he went through a nationalist phase and matured as a critic and translator.
His other great poems were Prosanatolismoi (1940), Helios ho protos (1943), Asma heroiko kai penthimo gia ton chameno anthypolochago tes Alvanias (1946) and Ta eterothale (1974) and had his literary work internationally recognized by receiving the Nobel Prize for literature (1979) and died in Athens.
