THE conative function, which is also called appealing, is one of language functions according to the normative grammar. THE conation features emphasis on message receiver, that is, it aims to persuade O recipient/interlocutor and influence their behavior.
We can find the conative language US advertising texts (advertisements) and in the religious texts (prayers, prayers), as both address the message receiverto convince him to do/think something. O imperative modeFrom verbs and the use of vocatives are some of the discursive strategies used in texts whose language function is essentially appealing.
It is important to note that there are others textual genres gives injunctive or prescriptive typology, like the cooking recipes or other instructional texts, such as installation manuals for electronic devices, which also use the imperative verbs. However, unlike advertising texts, for example, cooking recipes and the manualsof instructionno are intended to convince the recipient of the message, but only
inform you about some process or steps in a process. In this case, the language function maid is referential, andnoConative.Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)
Note the examples of texts whose language function is conative/appealing:
Conative language in advertising texts:
Conative language in prayers and prayers:
Our Father Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, sanctified be Your name.
Come to us Your Kingdom.
Be Your will done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Our daily bread so today.
forgive our offenses just as we forgive those who have offended us.
and not us leave fall into temptation, but deliverus from evil.
Amen.
