Meaning of Parallax (What it is, Concept and Definition)

THE parallax consists of an apparent displacement of an observed object, which is caused by a change in observer position.

To better understand what parallax is, do the following: Point at an object with your index finger in a vertical position, so that your finger is in the center of the object. Now close one eye to see the object with one eye. Then look at the object with your closed eye. Note that the object in question appears to have changed position. This is parallax and is because each eye sees the object from a different angle. This allows a person who can see well with both eyes to have a sense of depth and therefore distance.

Parallax in Astronomy

In astronomy, parallax is the apparent displacement of the observed direction of a star as a consequence of the movement of the point of observation, that is, the angle between the directions of observation of the star corresponding to the two extreme points of the line of season.

The parallax is smaller the further away the star is; so it is a measure of distance. Through parallax it is possible to determine the distance between a star and the Earth. The diurnal parallax is the oscillation of the position of the star as a consequence of the Earth's rotation (diurnal parallax of the Moon, on average 57); diurnal parallax of the sun, 8.8"; in the case of stars, this value is very small).

The annual parallax is due to the Earth's translational movement around the Sun. The station line is the average distance from Earth to Sun (the highest annual parallax of a star is 0.765", Near Centauri).

parallax errors

A parallax error happens thanks to an optical shift that is caused by an individual's angle of view, causing him to make a wrong observation on a grading scale.

Cognitive Parallax

Cognitive parallax is a studied concept Olav de oak. According to the Brazilian journalist, cognitive parallax is “the distance between the axis of theoretical construction and the axis of real experience announced by the individual”. It is a phenomenon of collective self-deception, which emerged in modernity and which is evident in several works by thinkers or scientists.

Parallax and Photography

Being a concept strongly present in the world of photography, parallax is the angle that is formed by the axes lens and viewfinder optics, which when focused on the same object, cause a short shift distances.

In compact cameras parallax errors are quite common. This is because the image the viewfinder is capturing is not the same as the image being captured by the camera lens. As there are two different angles of view, it is common for there to be a shift in framing.
