Atrium is a masculine noun in the Portuguese language that defines what would be the main room of the first temples of ancient Rome. Currently, it usually represents a patio at the entrance of a house or building, like a large reception hall.
In ancient Rome, the atrium was commonly used as a living and leisure room, as well as a kitchen and often bedroom. In the center of each atrium there was a kind of chimney, through which the smoke from the fire that was lit in the middle of the room came out, similar to the primitive halls of Europe.
The word came from Latin atrium, from ater, which means "black" or "black" in reference to the smoke-darkened ceiling that passes through this room.
In biology, the term atrium is linked to the cardiovascular system of the living being, being classified as right atrium and left atrium.
