With an area of just 14,371 km², Connecticut is the third smallest state in the United States. It is also the fourth most densely populated in the country. Its name comes from the Native American word “Quinnehtujqut”, which means “Place of the Long River”.
Connecticut was one of thirteen British colonies, became a US state on January 9, 1788. The state has a peculiar importance in the history of the United States, since the colony of Connecticut was the first to have a written constitution, which was the basis for drafting the Constitution of the country.
The state is limited to the north by Massachusetts, to the east by Rhode Island, to the west by New York, and to the south by Long Island Bay. Unlike many US states, Connecticut has a very homogeneous temperate climate. In summer, the average temperature is 22ºC; in winter, -3ºC.

Among all US states, Connecticut has the highest per capita income. The state is a major center for the insurance industry. Its capital, Hartford, is called the Insurance City because of the large number of companies in the industry present in the city. The largest city in the state is Bridgeport, which is part of the New York City metropolitan area.
