Monroe Doctrine

“'[...] We must, therefore, by the sincere and friendly relations existing between the United States and those powers, declare that we consider any attempt by them to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety. We do not and will not interfere with existing colonies or those dependent on any European power. But as for the governments that have declared their independence which we recognise, after much consideration and on fair principles, we cannot see any interference by part of any European power with the purpose of oppressing them or controlling their destiny, such as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition towards the States United. [...]”
