A geisha begins her training at a very young age, being initially designated as maiko, which means apprentice. During training, future geishas take singing, music, dance, posture and etiquette lessons, learn domestic chores and traditional Japanese arts in places suitable for this purpose called okiya.

Geisha tattoos are also quite popular especially for women, as they represent strength, delicacy and intelligence. Although the figure of a geisha is often linked to the concept of servitude, the vast majority chooses get this tattoo because the geisha was an example of culture, being a person closely linked to the world of Art.

Confusion between geisha and prostitute is frequent, but surrender to sex is not the main function of a geisha.

The geisha has been an inspiration for several artistic productions, among which the opera Madame Butterfly, by Puccini, and the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, by director Rob Marshall, based on Arthur Golden's eponymous bestseller, published in 1997. In the lyrics of the popular song You and beautiful, Caetano Veloso uses the uniqueness of the geisha as a reference, right in the first verse “Fonte de honey in the geisha's eyes”.
