King Louis I of France the Pious

Carolingian Emperor, son and successor of Charlemagne on the throne of the Franks (814-840), born in Chasseneuil, Aquitaine, of great importance in the expansion of the Catholic faith, called the Pious. Son of Emperor Charlemagne and his second wife, Irmengard (or Hildegard) of Swabia, before assuming the throne, he was co-emperor of his father. He inherited a stable empire that he shared between his three sons: Lothario, Pepino and Luís.
In August (814), he donated to Lothar and Pepino the kingdoms of Bavaria and Aquitaine, respectively. At the same time, he confirmed his nephew Bernardo on the throne of Italy. The new system of government allowed the growing strengthening of the fiefs, which became hereditary. Bernardo was the first to rise up against his uncle (817).
In the same year, the emperor reformed the previous government: he confirmed Pepino on the throne of Aquitaine, elevated Lothair to the dignity of co-emperor, and handed over Bavaria to Louis II the Germanicus. Widowed (818), he married again and from that link with Judite the future Carlos the Bald would be born (823). By granting the youngest the new kingdom of Germany (829), he provoked the rebellion of the three other sons, who joined the feudal lords to fight the king, who was defeated but soon returned to the throne by an assembly gathered in Nimegue.

After a new restructuring of the empire, in which Pepino lost Aquitaine to Charles, the brothers again deposed the emperor (834), this time with the support of Pope Gregory IV. New rebellions by the children against their father followed, but they were always defeated and then forgiven, earning him the title of the Pious One. He died on Petersau, an island on the River Rhine near Ingelheim, now Germany, leaving an empire weakened by family disputes.
