Flemish painter born in Leiden, Netherlands, master of chiaroscuro and considered one of the greatest painters in the West. He entered the university (1620) which he soon abandoned to devote himself to painting. He studied in Leiden with Jacob van Swanenburch and later in Amsterdam with Pieter Lastman. He returned to Leiden (1627) to work with Jan Lievens, also a disciple of Lastman.
Influenced by Caravaggio's innovations, he adapted the Italian master's chiaroscuro. Brilliant Painter, Brilliant Painter, Biblical, mythological and historical themes have become commonplace in his paintings, many custom painted. He settled in Amsterdam (1631), where he became a prosperous artist, soon surrounded by disciples, married with Saskia, also a wealthy woman, and led a luxurious life, living in a large house in the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam.
At this stage he became the main representative of the Protestant Baroque of Northern Europe and painted a huge series of portraits, many of them of rabbis and other Jews, and biblical scenes. after becoming widowed (1642) his art underwent great changes and these alterations diminished his popularity, but the level of his art did not, and he began his most productive phase. He began (1649) a loving relationship with the young Hendrickje Stoffels. starting a stage marked by the numerous self-portraits that raised the genre to one of its highest points in the history of art. Indebted, he passed the administration of his estate (1656) to his only son with Saskia, Titus, and his new partner.
In the following decade, he created several masterpieces, including the famous painting The syndics of the weavers' corporation (1662). A year after Titus' death he died in Amsterdam on 4 October (1669). Although he was then in relative obscurity, his reputation was regained in the 18th century and continued to grow into the 20th century. Other outstanding works throughout his life were The Supper at Emmaus (1630), Anatomy Lesson by Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632), Self-portrait with Saskia (1634), The Night Watch (1642), Christ Healing the Sick (1645) and The Man with the Golden Helmet (1650).
