Rudolf Albert von Kölliker

Swiss physician physiologist born in Zurich, who demonstrated the cellular origin of sperm and wrote the first treatise on embryology, in the same At the time Wöhler synthesized urea, he studied at the University of Zurich while taking summer courses at other European universities. He spent a semester at Bonn (1838) and at the University of Berlin for three semesters. There he studied physiology and comparative anatomy with Johannes Müller, microscopy with Jacob Henle and embryology with Robert Remak.
He received his Ph.D. in Zurich (1841) and his M.D. at the University of Heidelberg (1842). Appointed professor of anatomy at Zurich (1840), he was invited by von Koelliker to work as his assistant in histology and embryology. Demonstrating an emeritus researcher before turning 30, he had already made several important discoveries, especially in the field of neurohistology and the male reproductive system.
He was appointed professor of physiology, microscopy and comparative anatomy at the University of Würzburg (1847) and professor of anatomy (1849). In the years that followed, he attached great importance to research on electrophysiology. His basic observations on electrophysiology were fundamental to the subsequent development of electrocardiography. He spent over 50 years at the University of Würzburg, where he became one of the greatest medical scientists of the 19th century. A prolific author, he has published several influential monographs. popularly successful textbooks and over 300 papers.


His research, writings, and teaching helped to establish histology and cytology as distinct scientific fields. He received honorary degrees from universities such as Utrecht, Bologna, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He was the founder of the first chair of the German Anatomy Society. He stopped teaching at age 80, although he continued his research, and died in Würzburg.
