Reason, in the general sense, is the faculty of intellectual knowledge proper to the human being, is an understanding as opposed to an emotion. It's the ability of deductive thinking, accomplished through arguments and abstractions. It is the faculty of reasoning, of ascending to ideas.

The word reason comes from the Latin word, “ratio” and the Greek word “logos”, which means to gather, join, to measure, to calculate, therefore, reason means to think, to speak orderly, with measure, clearly and in a manner understandable.

The word reason is used in many senses, it can mean the ability to make an assessment in the right way, where common sense prevails, and prudence, where we feel sure of something or that we know something with certainty. Ex.: “I am right”. "He's not right."

Reason can also mean the cause or motive of an action, an attitude or a point of view. Ex.: “She was the most important reason for him to come back”.

The word reason is also used as if it were something you can have or lose. Ex.: “He lost his reason”. "He regained his senses."

Some synonyms of reason are: motive, pretext, justification, certainty and lucidity.

Reason in Philosophy

Philosophy sees reason as the moral conscience that guides wills and offers ethical ends to action. For many philosophers, reason is the moral and intellectual capacity of human beings and also the primordial property or quality of things themselves.

In the famous phrase of the French philosopher, Pascal (1623-1662), “The heart has reasons that reason itself does not know”, the word reason has two meanings, while "reasons" are the emotions of the heart, "reason" is the intellectual and moral conscience of the perception of stuff.

Reason in Mathematics

In mathematics, ratio is the constant difference between two consecutive terms in the progression if it is arithmetic and the quotient between two consecutive terms if it is geometric.
