Michigan is an American state located in the Midwest region of the country. It is known as "The Great Lakes State" as it borders on the Lake Superior to the north, Lake Huron to the east, Lake Michigan to the west, and Indiana and Ohio to the south. The region of the State was owned by France until 1764, when it was transferred to the United Kingdom. After the United States War of Independence in 1783, the territory came under the control of the Americans, who created the state of Michigan on January 26, 1837.
The same is divided into two peninsulas; the Upper Peninsula is far less populated than the Lower Peninsula. Michigan has about 11,000 lakes and many rivers; its forests cover about half of its territory. Due to the large amount of water bodies, their temperatures are usually milder in summer (averages of 22ºC) and quite low in winter (averages of -6ºC), mainly in the northern region of the State.
Michigan is one of the most important hubs of the auto industry in the world; the state is the largest producer of automobiles, buses and trucks in the United States. Its largest city, Detroit, is considered the automobile capital. Other important sources of wealth for the State are community and personal services, agriculture and livestock and mineral extraction.
Its population has been growing significantly in recent years, mainly due to immigration. Its largest ethnic groups are the Germans, Poles, Irish, African Americans and English.
