Manuel de Oliveira Lima

Brazilian historian born in Recife, PE, one of the most notable Brazilian historians, whose voluminous work of historiography and recognized seriousness in interpretation methods. Son of Luís de Oliveira Lima and Maria Benedita de Oliveira Lima, he graduated in literature in Lisbon (1890), worked in diplomatic services in Lisbon, at Venezuela, Japan, the United States and several European countries (1890-1913), while he was already carrying out his research for his vast historiographic work.
His main works were Pernambuco and its historical development (1894), Aspects of Brazilian colonial literature (1896), The recognition of the empire (1902), D. João VI in Brazil (1909), Formation historique de la nationalité brésilienne (1911), Historical evolution of America Latin compared to English America (1914), History of Civilization (1921), The independence movement (1922) and D. Peter and D. Miguel (1925).
He occupied chair number 39 of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (1903). He lived the last ten years of his life in Washington, USA, where he taught international law at the Catholic University, an institution that inherited his library of forty thousand volumes. He died in Washington, United States of America, on March 24 (1928).
