According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Brazilis the country with the highest rate of firearm-related deaths per population. This average is obtained through the number of homicides in relation to every 100 thousand inhabitants. In 2008, the Ministry of Justice released the Map of Violence in Brazilian municipalities, which registered 19.3 intentional homicides (with the intention to kill) for 100,000 inhabitants.
Brazil has high crime rates. In 2007 alone, 41,547 deaths were recorded as a result of crimes of murder, robbery followed by death and injuries followed by death.
Check the distribution by region of intentional homicides in Brazilian territory:
Southeast region: 36,4%
Northeast region: 34,9%
South region: 12%.
North region: 8,9%.
Midwest region: 7,8%.
Therefore, the Southeast Region presents the highest percentage of homicides in Brazil, with the index of Rio de Janeiro (39 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants) and Espírito Santo (37.3 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants) are two of the highest in the parents.
The Northeast Region also stands out (negatively) in this scenario of violence. The state of Pernambuco has the highest rate of intentional homicide in Brazil – 42.4 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants – an average that makes the state one of the most violent in the world. With 35.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, Alagoas contributes to this high homicide rate in the Northeast.
Northern Brazil has the second lowest average of homicides in the country. However, the state of Pará has the fifth highest rate of intentional homicides in Brazil: 32.2. Roraima, in turn, with an average of 11.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, is one of the least violent states in the country.
Mato Grosso is the Midwestern state with the highest average of homicides (28.3 homicides/100 thousand inhabitants). The Federal District has an average higher than the national: 22.1.
In the South, the highlight is the state of Santa Catarina, which has the lowest rate of homicides among the states in Brazil – 7.1 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Another (positive) highlight is the state of Piauí, located in the Northeast Region, whose average is 9.3 (second best in the country).
Public security policies must be developed to reduce these homicide rates that make Brazil the country with the highest number of deaths from the use of firearms by population.
