General aspects of the population of Sergipe

Located in the Northeast region, Sergipe borders the state of Bahia (to the south and west) and Alagoas (to the north), in addition to being bathed by the Atlantic Ocean (to the east). The territory of the state of Sergipe is the smallest in terms of land area in Brazil – 21,918,354 square kilometers –, corresponding to 0.26% of the country's total area.
According to a population count carried out in 2010 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Sergipe has a total of 2,068,017 inhabitants, distributed in 75 municipalities. Demographic density is 94.3 inhabitants per square kilometer; population growth is 1.5% per year. The total population of Sergipe corresponds to 1.08% of Brazilian inhabitants.
The ethnic composition of the population is as follows:
Blacks: 5%
Brown: 63%
Whites: 30%
Indians: 1%
Others: 1%

Most of Sergipe's inhabitants live in urban areas (73.5%), the rural population corresponds to 26.5% of the total contingent. Aracaju, capital, is the most populous city in the state – 571,149 inhabitants. Other municipalities with high population concentration are: Nossa Senhora do Socorro (160,827), Lagarto (94,861), Itabaiana (86,967), São Cristóvão (78,864), Estancia (64,409), Tobias Barreto (48.040).


Environmental sanitation services are insufficient: 87% of households have access to water; 53% of homes have a sewage system. This deficit in environmental sanitation directly affects the state infant mortality rate – 31.4 per thousand live births, one of the highest averages in the country.
The life expectancy of the Sergipe population, as well as throughout Brazil, is increasing every year, currently it is 70.3 years. Illiteracy affects 16.3% of the population. The homicide rate is 25.8 per thousand inhabitants.
