THE French population it is made up of about 62.6 million inhabitants, making it one of the most populous nations on the European continent. Demographic density, also known as relative population, is 113.5 inhabitants per square kilometer, so the country is heavily populated. Approximately 85% of the inhabitants reside in urban areas.

Paris, the national capital and considered a global city, is the most populous city in France, with about 9.9 million inhabitants. Other cities with high population concentration are: Lyon (1,423,000), Toulouse (847,000), Marseille (798,430), Nice (342,738), Nantes (270,251) and Strasbourg (264,115).

Most French people enjoy a high socioeconomic standard. According to data released in 2010 by the United Nations (UN), France has Human Development Index (HDI) very high, with an average of 0.872, occupying the 14th place in the national ranking, comprising 169 countries.

Among the good socioeconomic indicators in France are: the low infant mortality rate, with only 4 deaths per thousand live births; environmental sanitation services, which serve virtually all homes; life expectancy of 81.6 years, considered one of the highest in the world; illiteracy, which is practically nil; and per capita income: $42,680.
