National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa)

THE National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) was instituted by Law No. 9,782 of January 26, 1999. According to this law, Anvisa is an autarchy under a special regime, linked to the Ministry of Health, with headquarters and jurisdiction in the Federal District, for an indefinite period and operating throughout the national territory.
What is the role of Anvisa?

Anvisa's primary function is to promote the health of the population, acting in the sanitary control of several products, such as medicines, food and cosmetics; services and even in the inspection of ports, borders and airports. Among its competencies, we can highlight:

  • Control and inspect products, such as medicines, food and cosmetics, and services that involve health risk;

  • Establish norms and standards on limits on contaminants, toxics, disinfectants, heavy metals and others that can cause harm to health;

  • Grant registrations to products;

  • Prohibit the manufacture, distribution and storage of products that may harm health;

  • Banning places that pose an imminent risk to health;

  • Cancel the authorization to operate in places that violate legislation or pose a risk to health;

  • Monitor changes in the prices of medicines, equipment, supplies, components and health services.


Mission

Anvisa's mission is "protect and promote the health of the population, by intervening in the risks arising from the production and use of products and services subject to health surveillance, in coordinated and integrated action within the scope of the Single System of Health." [1]
Organizational structure

Anvisa is directed by a Collegiate Board, which features a CEO and other components, namely:

  • Health Control and Monitoring Board;
  • Sanitary Authorization and Records Directorate;
  • Health Regulation Board
  • Directorate of Coordination and Articulation of the National Health Surveillance System.
