WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol, which in Portuguese means Protocol for Wireless Applications. WAP is a technology that allows portable devices (cell phones, PDAs and others) to access the Internet.
The WAP protocol was created in the 1990s to make it possible to view data from the Internet on mobile devices (wireless). It was developed in the WML language (Wireless Markup Language or Markup Language for Wireless Communications).
Initially, the WAP protocol received a lot of negative reviews for presenting a service with little benefit to the user. The biggest disadvantages pointed out in WAP access were the cost of browsing, the low connection speed and the scarcity of visual resources.
The WAP 2.0 version was recreated in 2002 using the XHTML language Mobile Profile to provide the user with a better experience in viewing web content.
The latest generation cell phones have WAP browsers, however, it is a little used technology compared to other technologies developed for mobile applications.
