French saint probably born in Rome, first bishop of Paris and patron of France. Little is known about his life. According to St. Gregory of Tours, in the Historia francorum (History of the Franks), he was one of seven bishops sent to Gaul to convert the people at the time of Emperor Decius in the mid-third century.
He became bishop of Paris, then called Lutecia and, at the time of the persecution of Christians unleashed by Emperor Valerian, the Roman governor of the province had him martyred (258), probably in the village of Catulliacus, now Saint-Denis, on the outskirts of Paris. The abbey of Saint-Denis-de-l'Estrée, demolished in the 18th century, was built on his grave site.
In the fifth century a basilica was built near the tomb and a new abbey (626). Legend has it that, after his decapitation, his body walked to the site of his future abbey carrying the his own head is guided by an angel, and so he is commonly represented holding the head in his hands. cut off.
