Hashtag (#): what it means and what are the most used #hashtags

Hashtag is a very common expression among users of social networks on the internet. It consists of a keyword preceded by the # symbol, popularly known in Brazil as "jogo da Velha" or "square".

hashtags are used to categorize content published on social media, that is, it creates a dynamic interaction of the content with other members of the social network, who are or are interested in the respective published subject.

By using the hashtag in a post, the content will be available to anyone who accesses the same hashtag on the topic, allowing them to comment, share or like the content.

Hashtags emerged and became popular on Twitter, which categorized the hottest topics of the day through Trending Topics. Users use hashtags to precisely classify posts into specific subjects, a kind of "file" or "folder" to organize content amidst the confusion of information in the timeline from Twitter.

Currently, hashtags are available on several other social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Youtube. Not only as a tool to organize published content, hashtags have become "weapons advertising" among companies and institutions that use social networks as a means of communication and marketing.

Most used hashtags

The most popular hashtags in Brazil and in the world are present on Instagram and Twitter, platforms that work as microblogs. Among the main ones, then:

  • #instagood – Typical Instagram hashtag. It means that the user is proud of the photo they took and posted.
  • #tbt – Acronym in English of Throwback Thursday. In Portuguese, it means “going back in time”. Typically, on Thursday users post photos of when a person was young, child or baby.
  • #photooftheday - "Photo of the day", in English.
  • #instamood - Photos that represent your mood.
  • #ootd - Means Outfitof the day, in English. "Look of the Day", in Portuguese.
  • #follow - Follow.
  • #instadaily - Photo published on Instagram that reveals a little of the user's daily life.
  • #bestoftheday – The best post (or photo) made on the day.
  • # rule – Repost an image that someone else has previously posted.
  • #followback - Indication to follow the user back.
  • #tagsforlikes - The person puts in several hashtags to get likes. A "strategy" widely used on Instagram.
