The Czech Republic is a country that originated from the (peaceful) fragmentation of Czechoslovakia, on January 1, 1993, where two new nations emerged: Slovakia and Czech Republic. Its territory has no access to the sea and is limited to Poland (to the north), Slovakia (to the east), Austria (to the south) and Germany (to the west).
After decades under the socialist regime (in the Czechoslovakia period), the Czech Republic is one of the most economically developed nations of the extinct bloc. The fall of the old political regime provided an intense flow of tourists, whose main destination was the national capital, Prague. Declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the city consists of a great cultural center of the European continent, housing examples of Gothic architecture and baroque.
In addition to tourism, agriculture boosts the economy, with emphasis on the production and export of wheat. Other crops are: beets, potatoes and barley; livestock is developed through herds of cattle, pigs and goats. The industrial sector is in constant development, relying on the following segments: steel, metallurgy, automobiles, food, beverages and household appliances. The country is a member of the European Union (EU), and most exports are destined for the bloc.
The Czech Republic has a very high Human Development Index (HDI). The country has shown constant evolution in social indicators: malnutrition affects less than 5% of the population; the infant mortality rate is among the lowest on the planet: 4 for every thousand live births; all inhabitants over 15 years of age are literate.
