The Ministry of Education (MEC) stated last night, September 22, that the Provisional Measure (MP) of the New High School will not exclude the subjects of Arts, Physical Education, Philosophy and Sociology from the curriculum mandatory. According to the MEC, the text released to the press was not the final version.
The text distributed to the press during the New High School MP signing ceremony it suggested that these subjects would become optional in secondary education and no longer mandatory, as provided for in the Law of Basic Education Guidelines (LDB).
The information about the exclusion of subjects caused great repercussion on social media, with positions for and against, leaving in the background the other changes that the MP foresees, such as the increase in the load timetable, full-time school, curriculum flexibility, technical training in high school and teaching credits higher.

The Secretary of Basic Education of the MEC, Rossieli Soares, stated that "the end of any content and any discipline is not decreed". According to the secretary, the subjects of Arts and Physical Education will be included in the Common National Base, as well as all others.

The proposal of the New High School foresees that the content of the Common National Base is taught until the middle of the 2nd year of high school, when the The student will have to choose one of the five subject areas: Languages, Mathematics, Human Sciences, Natural Sciences and Technical Education and Professional. The only compulsory subjects throughout high school will be Portuguese, Mathematics and English.
How will it be in practice
Brasil Escola spoke with the pedagogical coordinator of Colégio Oficina do Estudante, in Campinas, to find out how the new high school will work in practice. Célio Tasinafo says that Arts can be taught in Languages, while the contents of Philosophy and Sociology can be covered in Human Sciences. Physical Education will be optional for all students from the second half of high school onwards.

The MP comes into force upon its signature, but its text has not yet been published in the Official Gazette of the Union. According to the Casa Civil Press Office, the text is undergoing legal adjustments and revision in Portuguese, and its publication will take place next week.
