Francisco Glicério Cerqueira Milk

Journalist, politician, Freemason and honorary general of the Brazilian Army born in Campinas, São Paulo, one of the campaign's artisans Republican and the only republican leader from São Paulo present at court on the historic morning of November 15, the day of the proclamation of the republic (1889). Of humble descent, he was a typographer, photographer, notary clerk, primary school teacher, solicitor and lawyer in Campinas. In his youth, he became close to the group of republicans campaigning in the interior of the province. Called to Rio de Janeiro by carioca coreligionists a few days before the proclamation of the republic, he participated intensely in the conspiratorial meetings that culminated in the fall of the monarchy.
With Quintino Bocaiúva and Aristides Lobo, he was responsible for choosing the members of the first provisional government. He held the Agriculture portfolio (1890-1891), led the movement in favor of Floriano Peixoto in the Chamber of Deputies and was head of Partido Republicano Paulista and the main organizer of the Partido Republicano Federal (1894), the first attempt to form a party national. He was a senator for the state of São Paulo (1902-1916) and in the exercise of his mandate came to preside over the Senate. He supported Hermes da Fonseca's candidacy for president (1910), and was quoted to compose with Rui Barbosa the presidential ticket that would run for the next period. Honorary general of the Army, for participating in the provisional government, he died in Rio de Janeiro.
