São Paulo population and ethnicities

São Paulo is the most populous state in Brazil, according to a population count carried out in 2010 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the state population totals 41,262,199 inhabitants, these are formed by people from the most varied national origins and international.

This huge population group, divided by color and/or race, corresponds to 67.9% of white people, blacks represent 5.8%, browns 24.7%, yellows 1.3% and indigenous 0.3%.

Due to the entry of immigrants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the state has a large number of foreigners, above all, Portuguese, Italians, Spaniards, Germans, Lebanese, Syrians, Armenians, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese and African descendants.

There was also, for many decades, a large flow of internal migration, thus, São Paulo received people from Bahia, Minas Gerais and Paraná, mainly from the northeast. Immigrants were and still are attracted to the capital in search of new financial perspectives, trying to achieve a better quality of life, but this rarely happens, as most of them are marginalized in the big cities and sometimes they are not even able to return to their homeland.
