Located in the Caribbean Sea, Trinidad and Tobago is an island country and has no land border with any nation. Its territory consists of two main islands (Trinidad and Tobago) and several islets. Although the islands are a geological extension of South America (northeast of Venezuela), the country belongs to Central America.
Trinidad, the island with the largest territorial extension (4,800 square kilometers), is home to the majority of the population, which is mainly made up of descendants of African slaves, in addition to Indian immigrants and Chinese. Tobago, in turn, has about 330 square kilometers, however, on this island are found the most beautiful beaches in the country.

During the colonial period, the country became a large sugarcane producer, using slave labor. In the second half of the 20th century, large reserves of oil and natural gas were found, becoming Trinidad and Tobago's main export products and source of income. The industrial sector, not very diversified, operates in the following segments: petrochemical, metallurgical, food, fertilizers, etc.
The nation has a high Human Development Index (HDI), with an average of 0.736, according to data released in 2010 by the United Nations (UN). The population enjoys an excellent education system (the illiteracy rate is only 1.3%) and health; environmental sanitation services are provided to approximately 92% of households.
