Almost 18 million students from 5,538 cities are taking this Tuesday, June 2nd, the first phase of the 11th edition of the Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP). This year's edition is special because it reached a record in the number of registered schools: 47,582.
In this first phase, the tests have 20 objective multiple-choice questions and are applied by the schools themselves to three levels of students: 6th and 7th grades of elementary school; 8th and 9th grades of elementary school; and high school.
Of the total number of students, the 5% with the best score, around 900 thousand, will be selected for the 2nd stage, to be held on September 12th. In the next phase, they will ask discursive questions that will be corrected by the General Coordination of the Olympics. The result will be out on November 27th.
award
In all, 6,500 candidates will be awarded, 500 with gold medals, 1,500 with silver medals and 4,500 with bronze medals. There will also be up to 46,200 certificates with honorable mention.
The teachers' award is linked to the students' award. According to the regulation, 1,029 professionals will be covered, 870 with diplomas and a CD with the editions of Revista do Professor de Matemática (RPM-SBM). In addition to these awards, 159 will also win a tablet. Schools and Municipal Departments of Education will be awarded a sports kit, teaching material and a trophy.
