World War II: Peace Agreements

After Japan's surrender, which took place on September 2, 1945, the allies mobilized forces to carry out the political agreements that would put an end to the Second World War. In fact, we can here point out that discussions about the post-war world took place before that.

Tehran Conference

In November 1943, at Tehran Conference, the allies drew up plans to materialize the defeat of the Germans and organize the first territorial divisions of the occupation troops of each country.

Yalta Conference

In February 1945, when the Axis forces were practically down, the allied forces rallied. to reaffirm the principle of self-determination of peoples and in favor of the expansion of a democratic regime at Yalta Conference. The zones of influence previously discussed in Tehran were confirmed and, thus, it was already possible to recognize in advance the development of a bipolar order led by the United States and the Soviet Union.

United Nations Charter

Another important point of this event was the beginning of the first dialogues that would give rise to the United Nations Organization (UN). This first attempt ended up being consolidated with the United Nations Charter, signed in June 1945, by more than fifty countries, in the American city of San Francisco. Already at that time, the five fundamental bodies that still form the foundations of the United Nations were established.

Potsdam Conference

With the presence of Josef Stalin (USSR), Clement Attlee (England) and Harry Truman (USA), the Potsdam Conference it happened in July and August 1945. At this meeting, Germany had its territory divided into four zones to be administered by the French, British, Americans and Soviets. Furthermore, this same meeting stipulated a compensation of twenty billion dollars to be paid by the German government.

One of the most significant actions taken in the German city of Potsdam was the organization of an international court for the trial of those involved in the Nazism. Working with the unprecedented legal concept of "war crime", the so-called Nuremberg Court carried out the death sentence of eleven Nazi leaders. Many of those who had other sentences managed to flee to Latin American countries and survive unpunished, secretly living until the end of their lives.

From a general point of view, the agreements related to World War II had enormous weight in making the bipolar order and the Cold War a reality. Eastern Europe became the most important area of influence of Soviet socialism. In return, the United States secured the entire Western portion of the European world and imposed also its influence on Japan, thus curbing a possible complete hegemony of socialism by East.
