Abu Abdullah Mohammed al-Hasani al-Idrisi

Arab poet and geographer, born in Ceuta, North Africa author of some of the most remarkable maps of the Middle Ages and of high quality verse. Born of a noble Arab family, he studied in Cordoba and traveled through Spain, Maghreb, Egypt and Anatolia and settled in Palermo, Sicily, after being invited to work at the court of Rogério II of Sicily (1145).
It was on these trips that he acquired the geographical knowledge to draw up his famous maps. Under the king's patronage he developed his most important geographical works. He built a celestial globe and a world map. a silver sphere, with the representation of the world then known, a map of lands located north of the equator, divided into seventy parallels and a geographical text titled Kitav nujat al-mustaq fi ikhtiraq al-afaq, also known as the Book of Roger, this one preserved and considered one of the greatest works of geography medieval.
He wrote several works of limited scientific value, including descriptions of the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, India and China. He also became interested in medicine, as he demonstrated in Kitab al-aduiya al-mufradah, a list of simple medicines and their applications.
