Rose of Saron is a biblical expression which is found in the Old Testament at Song of Songs 2:1. In some versions of the Bible it is written: "I am the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys".
This sentence is part of a dialogue between a Shulammite woman and her lover. In the time of Solomon (written from the book Song of Songs), the valley of Saron (a region of Palestine) was fertile and produced beautiful and abundant flowers. For this reason the bride describes herself as a rose and the groom confirms that she is like "a lily among thorns".
Does the Rose of Saron represent Jesus?
Some people attribute the title "Rose of Sharon" to Jesus Christ, however there is no biblical evidence to say that Jesus was the rose of Sharon. This comparison happened through the idea of beauty and perfection attributed to Jesus, an analogy being made with the rose, the most beautiful and perfect among the flowers of the valley of Saron.
Another version states that the dialogue symbolizes Jesus Christ and his Church. However, some authors reject this version, saying that this dialogue represents God (bride) and the nation of Israel (bride). This is because the formation of the Church only took place in the New Testament and spread through the ministry of the apostle Paul.
