Many in danger of infections from inappropriate use of toilet paper

Amid persistent debates over the choice between double-ply toilet paper, anti-bacterial or even considering whether it should be used for intimate hygiene, an innovative perspective emerges.

According to experts, it may be time to completely reconsider the use of toilet paper. Japanese scientists argue that the trocar, this traditional bidet method, could represent a significant change in preventing uncomfortable infections.

In a study published in Journal of Water & Health In 2022, researchers reveal that the use of bidets, where cleaning is carried out with water instead of just dry, can result in a drastic reduction without the risk of infections.

Surprisingly, bidet adherents were observed to have 10 times less dangerous bacteria on their hands compared to toilet paper users.

Scientists highlight a specific concern for Americans, pointing to the potentially fatal C. difficile. This pathogen is known to cause diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease.

Alarming statistics reveal that approximately 500,000 Americans contract this virus annually, with two-thirds of these cases being associated with children of the elderly.

In addition to the infection that affects many people, this pathogen causes the death of between 15 and 30 thousand people in the United States each year.

Inappropriate use of toilet paper

Evan Goldstein, a rectal surgeon practicing in New York City, emphasizes that embracing the use of bidets represents a significantly more effective approach to infection control compared to paper hygienic.

Using the wrong type of toilet paper and performing incorrect hygiene can trigger everything from irritation to more serious problems, such as hemorrhoids and even dangerous, fatal infections.

Single-ply toilet paper tends to be rougher on the skin than more expensive versions, which can cause skin abrasions and therefore increase the risk of infections.

The Dr. Trisha Pasricha, gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, he highlighted in an article for the Washington Post that single-ply toilet paper is very thin, which leads people to use more to accomplish the same task.

This increase in the amount used can intensify friction on the skin, contributing to possible irritation and skin damage.

Another crucial point is the cleaning method, especially for women: the cleaning movement from front to back is essential.

The practice is especially important to prevent fecal bacteria from entering the urethra, the channel through which urine is eliminated from the body.

Care is crucial to prevent urinary tract infections, as bacteria entering this region can result in uncomfortable and, in some cases, serious infections.
