Allies in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases
A study recently published in a journal adjacent to the renowned journal The Lancet pointed out the possible effectiveness of caffeine against Parkinson's and dementia, in particular.
Caffeine is a compound with stimulant properties that can be found in coffee and some types of tea, such as mate tea and green tea.
In the study, researchers looked at Asian individuals carrying the LRRK2 genetic variation, which is especially susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases.
As a result of the sampling, it was pointed out that those who consumed good amounts of coffee or tea periodically for certain period of time managed to reduce the chances of developing Parkinson's and dementia by at least four times.
Furthermore, individuals already diagnosed with one of the diseases had their symptoms alleviated as they included caffeinated drinks in their diet.

Nutritionist Krutika Nanavati, who specializes in observing the effects of the most diverse substances on the organism, argues that the antioxidant property of caffeine is the key to combating Parkinson's and insanity.
“Caffeine is an antioxidant, a substance proven to have neuroprotective properties,” she says.
Furthermore, Krutika points out the stimulating properties of caffeine as fundamental for the proper functioning of the brain.
“Coffee consumption has been linked to improved cognitive abilities, including memory, attention and processing skills. It stimulates the central nervous system, promotes alertness and reduces the perception of fatigue”, he lists.
Finally, Nanavati also lists the existence of polyphenols and catechins in caffeinated drinks. These substances contain, in addition to antioxidant power, anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins and minerals that boost the cognitive function of the brain.
“These substances are capable of alleviating neurodegenerative processes and increasing cognitive function. Incorporating tea and coffee into your regular diet can potentially delay the onset of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's,” he concludes.
