How does this system work?
The system is based on an acoustic sensor that uses low-intensity ultrasound through the headphones' speakers.
The emitted ultrasonic waves are picked up by the device's microphones as they return, and the resulting echo is used to identify the heart rate.
Google researchers developed a mathematical model to analyze and convert ultrasound echoes into accurate heart readings.

The researchers plan to subject the APG to more rigorous testing in higher-intensity activities, such as intensive walking, weight lifting, boxing and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
Ultimately, this technology is expected to revolutionize the collection of user health data, taking advantage of the nuances contained in the wavelength used by APG.
