The 50 cent coin that's worth 300 times more

The analysis of coins, banknotes and medals, considering their historical dimensions, artistic and economic, is called numismatics. Have you heard about this vast universe?

The term is commonly used to describe the practice of collecting these artifacts. However, a universal curiosity arises regarding the practice: what is capable of setting such a high value for a simple coin?

Have you ever come across a peculiar coin, exhibiting unique characteristics? Although Brazil's common coins generally have a modest value, representing only a few cents or, at most, one real, there are those that can reach values of hundreds or even thousands of real.

This apparent contradiction can be intriguing, since it would be unlikely that someone would use a 50-cent coin to pay off a R$100 bill, for example. Coin collectors attribute value to specific characteristics present in rare examples.

This covers coins produced for special celebrations, minting or manufacturing errors, limited production of copies and scarce circulation in the country.

Within this numismatic analysis, there is a 50 cent coin that has been sought after for a high value!

50 cent coin is worth R$150

In Brazil, the manufacture of money is carried out by the Casa da Moeda, through commissions from the Central Bank (BC). On special occasions, such as celebrations and commemorative dates, the BC requests exclusive and limited production of certain copies.

Generally, it is these models that can be worth a fortune due to their scarcity. However, in addition to the restricted quantity, other factors can increase the value of a coin beyond its face value.

In the case of the 50-cent coin, which has attracted attention in Brazil, a notable expert raised its value to R$150. This example stands out from common coins because it has a smooth disc, that is, without coinage.

In reality, only the inscription on the edge was made, a process carried out before the actual minting. However, the usual coinage with the effigy on the obverse and the expression “50 centavos” on the reverse was not made.

These items are extremely rare in Brazil, as they reflect a possible error by the Mint, which did not complete the minting of the sides of the coin.

This coin has a smooth disc, that is, without the mint mark. The only visible inscription is on the edge, made before the minting process.

However, the typical coinage with the image on the obverse and the inscription “50 centavos” on the reverse was not made. The rarity of this type of coin in Brazil is evident, as it reflects a possible error in the production of the Mint, which failed to mint both sides of the copy.
