Authorship of the attack on Israel

The Hamas group claimed responsibility for the attacks through an official statement. They call what happened "Al-Aqsa Flood", Al-Aqsa is the name of the 3rd holiest site for Muslims, behind only Mecca and Medina.

According to Hamas, the attack was a response to Israel's attacks on Palestinian community which would include banning Muslims from practicing their religion in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. They stated the following regarding the justifications for the attack:

The priority of this operation is to protect Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa and prevent the occupation's plans to Judaize them and build their alleged temple on the ruins of the first Qibla of Muslims.
