The affected lots belong to well-known brands, including Fazenda Mineira, Jardim, Lunhador Extra Forte, Lunhador Tradicional, Balaio, Bico de Ouro and Bico de Ouro 100% Puro e Robusta.

The fraud, which aimed to increase the volume of coffee products in a dishonest way, is now being investigated by the government. Tiago de Dokonal, coordinator of Plant Quality Inspection, explained that:
“These residues from coffee bean processing were roasted as if they were legitimate coffee beans,” says Dokonal.
This is not the first time that coffee-related fraud has been discovered. In July 2023, the Department of Inspection of Products of Plant Origin carried out a joint operation to combat fraud in coffees in several states.
During this operation, a roasted and ground grain factory in Minas Gerais was banned, and large quantities of irregular coffee were seized. In total, more than 26 brands were identified with signs of infringement, highlighting the extent of the problem.
Mapa and other inspection bodies redouble their efforts to guarantee the quality and authenticity of products sold in Brazil, one of the largest coffee producers and exporters in the world.
